Ed attended a one room school from elementary to high school. If students misbehaved, they were sent outside to chop wood for the stove, the only source of heat for the school house. Part of the curriculum for Ed during his high school was helping to install electricity in the school house. Ed got his start in business delivering the Halifax Herald until high school. In summers, he worked in the Valley Creamery moving heavy butter boxes.
